Sadly you are right. There is a myth that the press just lined up behind whatever we did in WWII. It isn't true, if you read the stuff you can see they were just as bitchy then, but they did do two things you don't see today.
One, they thought we should win. They might have argued we should do more of this or less of that or that we were doing it too slow or too fast, but they wanted us to win without question. That is clearly not the case now.
Secondly they kept the public informed on what was actually happening. It wasn't reported as 20,000 killed and wounded today, it was reported why as well. The news today is just 2 soldiers killed in bomb attack, but we get no context as to what the soldiers were doing, or what operations the military is running to deal with the insurgents. For all we know from the press our boys are just driving around waiting to get blown up, and we know that isn't true.
Anyway, great link, I think I will go dig around my boxes and pull out my Ernie Pyle and Bill Mauldin books and reread them.
